The use of knee mega-prosthesis for the management of distal femoral fractures: A systematic review

Meluzio MC, et al. - By analyzing the literature data, researchers assessed which fracture, both acute and chronic, involving distal femur should be treated by using a mega-prosthesis. They identified studies including individuals of any age affected by a distal femur fractures treated by using a megaprosthesis, by exploring electronic databases. Using descriptive statics, the data were summarized. This review included 13 articles, with 104 patients treated with knee megaprosthesis. Based on the findings, the possible validity of knee megaprosthetic implants as a treatment choice for attenuating patients’ immobilitazion and hospital stay, was indicated. All included studies demonstrated good clinical outcomes with low rate of complications. Concerning long-term outcomes and complications, there is a lack of literature data.
