The use of expanded carrier screening of gamete donors
Human Reproduction Apr 15, 2021
Payne MR, et al. - In assisted reproductive technology, the use of expanded carrier screening (ECS) is becoming common, including testing of egg and sperm donors. Researchers sought to report on the sperm and egg donor rejection rates after ECS. Through an online search, they reviewed the current preconception ECS panels available to donors. Analysis of the genetic testing results of donors from Cryos International was done to ascertain how many were rejected on the basis of the ECS. Review of a total of 16 companies and 42 linked ECS panels was done. A total of 2,673 unique disorders were identified that were covered by the panels examined, with a mean of 329 disorders screened. Overall findings revealed rejection of 17.6% of donors when an ECS panel looking at 46/47 genes was used.
