The use of blood and blood products in aortic surgery is associated with adverse outcomes
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Mar 20, 2021
Sultan I, Bianco V, Aranda-Michel E, et al. - Researchers aimed at describing the long-term consequences after deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) with or without perioperative blood or blood products. They performed propensity matching of all patients who underwent proximal aortic surgery with DHCA from 2011-2018 on baseline characteristics. From a total of 824 patients who underwent aortic replacement requiring circulatory arrest, they included 224 patients in each arm (transfusion and no transfusion) after matching. Outcomes revealed correlation of perioperative transfusions with poor outcomes among patients undergoing aortic surgery with DHCA; this was observed despite matching for preoperative baseline characteristics.
