The use of an Emergency Department dysphagia screen is associated with decreased pneumonia in acute strokes

Schrock JW, et al. - Because dysphagia can lead to hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and increase the morbidity and mortality among patients with an acute stroke, whether or not a ED dysphagia screen could lower rates of pneumonia in these patients was determined. A significant reduction in the rates of HAP in association with the use of an ED dysphagia screen was noted in both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients.
