The use of abdominal imaging studies in children visiting emergency department was variable and unsystematic
Acta Pediatrica Jul 02, 2019
Lammi M, et al. - Via collecting indications and imaging reports of consecutive children who had undergone abdominal imaging in general, surgical and paediatric emergency departments (EDs), researchers assessed the indications and diagnostic yield of abdominal imaging, particularly ultrasound at ED. A total of 394 imaging studies, 310 ultrasounds, 72 X-rays and 12 computed tomographies (CT) were performed for 348 children (55% boys) aged 0–16.9 years, median 7.1 years. Suspected appendicitis or infection and explanation for symptoms, for X-ray suspected foreign body and obstruction and for CT trauma were the most common indications of ultrasound. Overall, the authors concluded that there has been wide variation in the indications and yield of abdominal imaging. The clinical advantages, especially those of US, have often been questionable, leading even to delayed diagnosis and complications. In the pediatric ED, more uniform guidelines for imaging are required.
