The syncope-falls index (SYFI): A tool for predicting risk of syncope and complex falls in the older adult based on cumulative health deficits
QJM: An International Journal of Medicine May 28, 2021
Fitzpatrick N, et al. - This study was intended to establish an index to prognosticate future risk of syncope and falls in the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). From TILDA Wave 1 (2010), researchers selected 40 deficits that might increase the risk of syncope and falls using the frailty index methodology. They applied this syncope-falls index (SYFI) to TILDA Wave 1 participants aged 65 and over, who were classified into three risk groups (low, intermediate, high) based on SYFI tertiles. They used multivariate logistic regression models to evaluate, controlling for age and gender, how SYFI groups predicted incident syncope, complex falls and simple falls occurring up to Wave 4 of the study (2016). In this cohort, the 6-year incidences of falls and syncope were high. This study’s findings demonstrate that SYFI could help distinguish older adults at the risk of syncope and complex falls, and facilitate early referral to specialist clinics to improve outcomes.
