The short Sing-a-Song Stress Test: A practical and valid test of autonomic responses induced by social-evaluative stress

Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic and Clinical Feb 26, 2020

van der Mee DJ, et al. - Given Sing-a-Song Stress Test [SSST; a recently proposed alternative to the Trier Social Stress Test to determine autonomic nervous system responses to social-evaluative stress] is quite long (~15 min) and the necessity for confederates makes it labor-intensive, and therefore, researchers investigated if subjective and physiological stress reactivity can still be elicited reliably by using a shorter (~6.5 min), single-experimenter, version of the SSST. Overall 87 healthy young adults (age range: 18–35 years) were included. Significant reductions in positive affect and raises in negative affect were produced by the short SSST. The short SSST elicited significant heart period (−118.46 ms), pre-ejection period (−7.76 ms), skin conductance level (+4.85 μS), non-specific skin conductance responses (+8.42 peaks/min) and root mean square of successive differences (−14.67) reactivity, as demonstrated by MANOVAs on the clusters of sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system variables. Overall, findings proved the validity as well as cost-effectiveness of the short SSST as a task for large-scaled studies to induce social-evaluative stress to an adequate degree to elicit measurable alterations in parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system activity and affective state.
