The severity and risk factors for mortality in immunocompromised adult patients hospitalized with influenza-related pneumonia
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials Aug 28, 2021
Chen L, Han X, Li YL, et al. - Patients with influenza-related pneumonia (Flu-p) had more severe outcomes in presence of immunocompromised (IC) conditions.
Retrospective recruitment of 122 IC and 1,191 immunocompetent patients hospitalized with Flu-p was done.
In the presence of immunosuppression, patients were at increased risks for invasive ventilation, admittance to the intensive care unit, and 30-day mortality.
In IC patients with Flu-p, independent correlates to 30-day mortality were baseline lymphocyte counts, coinfection, early neuraminidase inhibitor therapy, and systemic corticosteroid use at admission.
For lymphocyte counts, the optimal cutoff was 0.6 × 109/L with sensitivity: 97.8%, specificity: 73.7%.
