The role of vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy in the management of Fournier gangrene: A retrospective multi-institutional cohort study

World Journal of Urology Apr 05, 2020

Iacovelli V, Cipriani C, Sandri M, et al. - Researchers examined the efficacy of vacuum assisted closure (VAC) therapy vs conventional dressings in the treatment of Fournier gangrene wound. In this retrospective multi-institutional cohort study, they retrospectively analyzed data from 92 patients from nine centers. Among these 92 patients, local FG was reported in 62 (67.4%) and disseminated FG in 30 (32.6%). VAC therapy was provided after surgery to 19 patients (20.7%) with local and 14 (15.2%) with disseminated FG. Treatment with conventional dressings was applied in 43 (46.7%) with local and 16 (17.4%) with disseminated FG. Outcomes suggest that VAC therapy is possibly beneficial for patients with disseminated FG in terms of 10-weeks wound closure cumulative rate and OS at 90 days after initial surgery.
