The role of the maternal and fetal inflammatory response in retinopathy of prematurity
American Journal of Reproductive Immunology Jun 11, 2018
Lynch AM, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study including infants screened for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (2006-2016), researchers aimed to investigate the contribution of placental inflammation to severe ROP. The four categories of the placental pathology were formed based on the presence of maternal plus fetal inflammatory response, maternal inflammatory response only, fetal inflammatory response only and, no evidence of a maternal or fetal inflammatory response. They found that for severe ROP, a significant risk factor was placental pathology distinguished by the maternal plus fetal inflammatory response. An association was observed between intrauterine inflammatory events and the subsequent development of severe ROP.
