The role of surgical resection in primary central nervous system lymphoma: A single-center retrospective analysis of 70 patients
BMC Neurology May 16, 2021
Wu S, Wang J, Liu W, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective analysis to assess the impact of surgical resection and stereotactic biopsy on the complication rate, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of 70 patients diagnosed with primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) at a single institution, as well as the predictors of resection selection and PCNSL prognostic factors. Between January 1, 2013, and May 31, 2019, 70 patients (mean age 53.3 ± 14.3 years) with histological confirmation of PCNSL admitted to Tongji Hospital, were identified. A headache was the most common clinical manifestation. The outcomes of patients with PCNSL treated in the cohort remain poor. In the series, surgical resection was found to significantly improve OS and PFS when compared with stereotactic biopsy in a subset of patients. The type of surgery and the location of the tumour are both prognostic factors for PCNSL.
