The role of novel biomarkers in predicting diabetic nephropathy: a review
International Journal of Nephrology and Renovascular Disease Aug 24, 2017
Uwaezuoke SN et al. – This review article discusses the predictive role of novel biomarkers in the evaluation of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Despite the use of microalbuminuria as the gold standard for early detection of DN, there is a shift to novel biomarkers which would help predict early risk of DN and thereby prevent the occurrence of end–stage kidney disease. These include glomerular biomarkers, tubular biomarkers, biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, and miscellaneous biomarkers. Despite the potential use of these biomarkers in the evaluation of DN, their major clinical use is still precluding. However, validation of these biomarkers using high–quality studies is required for the subsequent development of a biomarker panel that could predict and evaluate renal microvascular disease.
