The role of hypoxia as the driving force for non-erythroid production of globin chains in preeclamptic placentas
Placenta Sep 13, 2017
Masoumi Z, et al. - Analysts explore the role of hypoxia in the cause of hemoglobin subunit alpha (HBA) production in non-erythroid placental stromal cells in preeclampsia (PE). Increased oxidative stress (OS) and hypoxia in PE placentas trigger activation and nuclear transportation of hypoxia inducible factor 1A (HIF 1A) and NRF2 to facilitate cell survival. This leads to overexpression of HBA in the placental stromal cells that may contribute to the excess hemoglobin previously portrayed in PE.
