The role of endoscopic dilation and stents in refractory benign esophageal strictures: A retrospective analysis
BMC Gastroenterology Jun 25, 2019
Lu Q, et al. - In the management of refractory benign esophageal strictures (RBES) [defined as refractory to at least three endoscopic treatment sessions], researches analyzed the role of endoscopic dilation and stents placement. Between January 2009 and December 2017, RBES patients treated with dilation and stents in the hospital were involved. According to this single-center retrospective study, the dysphagia-free period increased by 12 days per endoscopic therapy, so the endoscopic therapy tended to be effective in RBES patients by increasing the dysphagia-free period. However, stent therapy was not effective compared with dilation therapy in increasing the dysphasia-free period and reducing dilation times and frequency. Furthermore, univariate and multivariate analyses also indicated that the result of endoscopic therapy may be predicted by etiology. In patients with postsurgical strictures, the probability of endoscopic treatment failure was high.
