The role of C-reactive protein and white blood cell count in the prediction of length of stay in hospital and severity of odontogenic abscess
Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery Dec 15, 2018
Heim N, et al. - Experts evaluated the C-reactive proten (CRP)-levels and white blood cell (WBC)-count as predictive factors of the developement of odontogenic abscess. They conducted a 4-year retrospective study to evaluate hospital records of 218 patients, diagnosed and inpatiently treated for acute odontogenic abscess. CRP is more capable in providing exact statements regarding the LOS in predicting the developement of odontogenic abscess. Nonetheless, they noted greater suitablity of WBC-counts in predicting multiple space infections and localization of infection. Significantly higher WBC-counts are demonstrated by abscess focus in the mandible. A significantly higher CRP and WBC on admission day are presented by multiple space infections.
