The risk of intrapartum/neonatal mortality and morbidity following birth at 37 weeks gestational age: A nationwide cohort study
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Apr 10, 2019
Eskes M, et al. - Researchers performed nationwide cohort study to determine intrapartum/neonatal mortality and morbidity risk in infants born at 37 weeks vs infants born at 39-41 weeks of gestational age. From the national perinatal registry (PERINED), they analyzed data of 755,198 women delivering at term of a singleton without congenital malformations during 2010-2014. Outcomes revealed a higher frequency of clinically relevant adverse perinatal outcomes in independent correlation to birth at 37 weeks vs birth at 39-41 weeks. Particularly, the risk for intrapartum/neonatal mortality was two times higher among those with a spontaneous start of labor at 37 weeks. Findings thereby emphasize performing extra fetal monitoring.
