The risk of delayed intracranial hemorrhage with direct acting oral anticoagulants after trauma: A two-center study
The American Journal of Surgery Oct 18, 2018
Barmparas G, et al. - In trauma patients on direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs), researchers described the risk of a delayed intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) by reviewing patients on DOACs admitted to two level I trauma centers between 2014 and 2017. Delayed intracranial hemorrhage developed only in 1.2% of these patients. Repeat cross-sectional imaging of the brain is not necessary for patients at risk for a TBI who are on DOACs when the initial imaging is negative. Findings justify a period of clinical observation.
