The risk of community-acquired pneumonia in children using gastric acid suppressants
European Respiratory Journal Mar 29, 2021
van der Sande LJTM, Jöbsis Q, Bannier MAGE, et al. - Utilizing data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, researchers conducted a cohort study to assess the risk of community-acquired pneumonia in children using acid suppressants (proton pump inhibitors and/or histamine-2-receptor antagonists). All patients, aged 1 month to 18 years, with a prescription of acid suppressants were involved and matched to up to 4 unexposed children. The cohort included 84,868 exposed children and 325 ,329 unexposed children. The use of acid suppressants in children was linked to a twofold increase in the risk of community-acquired pneumonia. This risk increased with chronic use, respiratory disease, and remained elevated after therapy was discontinued.
