The risk of autoimmune disorders in treated celiac disease patients in Olmsted County, Minnesota
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Sep 28, 2019
Khan MR, et al. - A total of 249 treated patients with celiac disease (CD) during the study period and 498 matched controls were involved to evaluate the incidence of autoimmune disorders (ADs) in treated patients with CD. Five years following the index date, 5.0% and 1.3% of patients with CD and controls had a de novo AD diagnosis. In the presence of a former AD, the cumulative risk of a de novo or supplementary AD was notably greater in the CD group in comparison with controls. A markedly greater risk of AD development was noted in children compared with adults. Hence, for the development of ADs, treated patients with CD are at greater risk. Moreover, the risk of a new AD is greater in children, particularly when > 1 AD diagnosis endures.
