The risk for childhood malignancies in the offspring of mothers with previous gestational diabetes mellitus: A population-based cohort study
European Journal of Cancer Prevention Jul 10, 2019
Kessous R, et al. - In this population-based cohort analysis, researchers compared children born to mothers with vs without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in terms of the risk for long-term childhood malignancies (≤18 years). They ultimately intended to determine how long-term risk of childhood malignancies is influenced by the hyperglycemic intrauterine environment. In both groups, the observed hospitalizations involving malignancy diagnoses as well as the cumulative incidences of total oncological morbidity using a Kaplan–Meier survival curve were found to be comparable. No increased risk of childhood malignancies was reported in relation to exposure to intrauterine hyperglycemic environment because of maternal GDM in this study.
