The relationship of psychological factors and asthma control to health-related quality of life
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Jul 25, 2019
Beatriz GF, et al. – Via assessing a sample of 373 patients with asthma, researchers investigated how health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is influenced by anxiety, depression, coping strategies, and asthma control. They also determined how HRQoL is affected by asthma control when it is established by the physician vs when it is considered by the patient. Worse HRQoL in all dimensions (except Mental Health for asthma control) was reported in relation to anxiety, depression, and poor patient-rated asthma control status. In physical generic and specific dimensions, worse HRQoL was observed in relation to physician-rated asthma control. HRQoL, in a few dimensions, was influenced by only avoidant coping among coping strategies. Overall, the crucial independent predictors of asthma HRQoL identified in this study were anxiety, depression, and asthma control (particularly patient-rated asthma control). The investigators recommended taking into account all these factors in interventions to enhance HRQoL in patients with asthma.
