The relationship of preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate and outcomes after cardiovascular surgery in patients with normal serum creatinine: A retrospective cohort study

BMC Anesthesiology Jun 05, 2019

Jang MS, et al. - Among adults (n=2208) undergoing elective cardiovascular surgery, researchers assessed preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for its ability to predict complications post-cardiovascular surgery in patients with normal serum creatinine levels. They used Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equations to compute preoperative eGFR. Overall 2208 patients were included. Preoperative eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 was present in 185 (8.4%) and postoperative major complications were developed by 328 (14.9%). Compared to serum creatinine, eGFR allowed better discrimination of composite 90-day major postoperative complications. Findings revealed a significant association of decreased eGFR with an increased risk of major complications post-cardiovascular surgery in patients with preoperatively normal serum creatinine levels.
