The relationship between serum insulin-like growth factor-1 levels and body composition changes after sleeve gastrectomy
Obesity Facts Oct 20, 2021
Ohira M, Watanabe Y, Yamaguchi T, et al. - Findings demonstrate usefulness of preoperative insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) measurement in predicting successful weight loss after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). In addition, preoperative serum IGF-1 levels were identified to be associated with decreased body fat mass and maintaining skeletal muscle mass post-LSG.
This is a retrospective review of 72 patients with obesity who had LSG and were followed up for 12 months.
A significant reduction in body weight was conferred by LSG.
Post-LSG, reduction was evident in both body fat mass and skeletal muscle mass.
Significant correlation of preoperative serum IGF-1 levels with the following was evident: total weight loss percentage, alterations in skeletal muscle mass, and body fat mass following LSG.
