The relationship between pressure injury complication and mortality risk of older patients in follow-up: A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Wound Journal Oct 24, 2019
Song YP, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the mortality of patients with pressure injuries and those without pressure injuries by searching PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science up to April 2019. Mortality studies have been included among elderly patients with and without pressure injuries. By the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, methodological quality was assessed. The research comprised eight studies involving 5,523 elderly patients. The meta-regression analysis showed that the source of heterogeneity was not the enrolled year, average age, the incidence of pressure injuries, or gender ratio of patients. During the 3 years follow-up period, patients complicated with pressure injuries are estimated to have a two times higher risk on mortality vs those without pressure injuries. Particular attention should be paid to elderly patients at higher mortality risk.
