The relationship between parental attitudes and children's alcohol use: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Addiction Jun 19, 2019
Tael-Öeren M, et al. - Researchers examined if parental attitudes towards children's alcohol use is associated with their child's alcohol use. In addition, they determined how attitudes reported by parents are associated with those perceived by children, and how perceived parental attitudes are associated with children's alcohol use. From Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science, they screened 471 articles; of these, they included 29 with data from 16,477 children and 15,229 parents for this meta-analysis. Outcomes revealed that a less restrictive parental attitude towards children's alcohol use was linked with increases in children's alcohol use onset, alcohol use frequency, and drunkenness. In addition, they observed that children's perception of less restrictive parental attitudes was related to children's alcohol use.
