The relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea and postoperative delirium and pain: An observational study of a surgical cohort
Anaesthesia Sep 27, 2019
Strutz PK, Kronzer V, Tzeng W, et al. - Researchers evaluated postoperative delirium and acute postoperative pain severity in correlation with obstructive sleep apnoea in this retrospective, observational investigation. The presence of a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea or positivity for more than four factors on the ‘STOP-BANG’ screening tool was required to classify the patients as being at high risk for obstructive sleep apnoea. In 1,441 patients, the incidence of postoperative delirium was estimated to be 307. A link was found between high risk for obstructive sleep apnoea and delirium in unadjusted analysis but the link was not statistically significant following adjustment for pre-specified variables. Experts concluded that it is unlikely that obstructive sleep apnoea confers a strong risk for postoperative delirium or acute postoperative pain severity.
