The relationship between histopathologic findings and weight loss in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
Obesity Surgery Oct 13, 2019
Erkinuresin T, et al. - Researchers examined whether histopathologic findings detected in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) specimens are associated with excess weight loss percentages (%EWL) and excess BMI decrease percentages (%EBL). They studied patients who underwent LSG in the hospital’s Gastroenterological Surgery Department between the years 2013 and 2018 and who had 1-year follow-up data available. On comparing among diagnosis groups, the histopathologic analysis revealed higher 12th month mean %EWL measurement in the inactive stomach diagnosis group. In the comparisons among intestinal metaplasia (IM) groups, the group without IM had higher 6th-month %EWL and %EBL and 12th-month %EWL and %EBL measurements. Weight loss was identified to be negatively affected by age, baseline BMI and active gastritis incidence in histopathologic analysis. These findings suggest that operating on younger patients with lower BMI and inactive gastritis with the LSG method may lead to the achievement of more successful results.
