The relationship between disordered eating behaviors and injury rates in adolescent athletes
International Journal of Eating Disorders Nov 19, 2021
Gusfa D, Mancine R, Kennedy S, et al. - Researchers examined if and how disordered eating (DE) is associated with significant sport injury in adolescent athletes.
Researchers analyzed data on injury from 308 adolescent athletes with their responses to one item of the Disordered Eating Screen for Athletes and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) items.
Significantly higher EAT-26 scores were recorded for injured females (median score of 9) relative to all other groupings.
Adolescent female sport injury appeared to be associated with DE, but there appeared no relationship between adolescent male sport injury and DE.
Considering the results, researchers support the necessity for screening athletes for DE.
In cases with a positive screen, education on the risks associated with relative energy deficiency is recommended and referral to a practitioner with knowledge of the associated complications should be made.
