The relationship between clinical and quantitative measures of pain sensitization in knee osteoarthritis
The Clinical Journal of Pain Apr 10, 2020
Moore RL, et al. - Given the correlation of pain sensitization in knee osteoarthritis (OA) with greater symptom severity and poorer clinical outcomes, researchers here examined if and how quantitative sensory testing (QST) is associated with clinical measures of pain sensitization in people with knee OA. Data from 134 participants with knee OA were secondarily analyzed. Findings revealed fair to moderate correlations, ranging from −0.331 to −0.577, between manual tender point count (MTPC), the Central Sensitization Inventory, number of painful sites, and pressure pain thresholds. Findings revealed strongest association of MTPC with QST measures and suggested it as possibly the most promising proxy measure to detect pain sensitization clinically.
