The relation between ABO blood types and clinical and platelet function parameters in patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention

Coronary Artery Disease Dec 13, 2018

Timur AA, et al. - Researchers assessed the link between ABO groups and platelets in 206 patients who had percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and were treated with dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel. They used various assays tio measure platelet function. They analyzed 44 clinical and 30 platelet function parameters and classified patients as aspirin or clopidogrel poor responder (PR). In significant association with blood type A, myocardial infarction (MI) history, higher baseline troponin T and creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) index, post-PCI CK-MB index, and platelet reactivity index (PRI), and being PR against 2-methylthioadenosine 5′-monophosphate triethylammonium salt hydrate (2-MeSAMP) were observed. This implied that blood type A confers risk for MI. Also, group O had higher arachidonic acid-induced aggregation and higher PRI was observed in group A against aspirin and P2Y12 inhibitor treatment, respectively. This could suggest alternative antiplatelet therapies for PRs with these blood types.
