The Reflux Symptom Index and symptom overlap in dysphonic patients
The Laryngoscope Feb 14, 2020
Kavookjian H, et al. - Among 546 patients with dysphonia [a common presenting symptom of patients seen by both primary care providers and otolaryngologists] attributable to a variety of pathologies, researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to investigate responses to the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI). All the study participants presented with the chief complaint of dysphonia to a tertiary care voice center from January 2011 to June 2016. Vocal cord paresis/paralysis (surgery), vocal fold atrophy (VT), and LPR (MM) was the most common diagnosis for each group. Pretreatment RSI scores were raised for a variety of laryngeal pathologies in patients with dysphonia. Regardless of etiology, scores often improved with directed treatment. This emphasizes the symptom overlap between reflux and nonreflux dysphonia causes, and the value of a comprehensive workup for individuals with voice complaints.
