The ratio of plasma angiopoietin-2 to angiopoietin-1 as a prognostic biomarker in patients with sepsis
Cytokine Feb 21, 2020
Seol CH, Yong SH, Shin JH, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective cohort analysis to assess links between plasma angiopoietin (Angpt) and several inflammatory cytokines and death among critically ill patients with sepsis, to ultimately determine whether Angpt can be used as a predictive biomarker for sepsis. Participants were 145 patients who encountered sepsis and were admitted to the medical intensive care unit of a 2000-bed university tertiary referral hospital in South Korea. A correlation of plasma Angpt-2 with interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α was revealed. Correlation of plasma Angpt-2 and Angpt-2/1 with the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score was also identified. Acute respiratory distress syndrome, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, and Angpt-2/1 > 3.2 were identified as risk factors for 28-day mortality in multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. Findings revealed the link of plasma Angpt-2 with cytokines, as well as showed the utility of the Angpt-2/1 ratio as a good predictor of 28-day mortality in patients with sepsis.
