The protective effect of isoniazid preventive therapy on tuberculosis incidence among HIV positive patients receiving ART in Ethiopian settings: A meta-analysis
BMC Infectious Diseases May 17, 2019
Geremew D, et al. - Researchers performed this meta-analysis with the primary aim of assessing the protective impact of isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) on the incidence of active tuberculosis and a secondary aim of evaluating the pooled incidence of active tuberculosis (TB) among HIV positive patients taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) with and without IPT intervention in Ethiopia. This analysis included seven suitable studies. HIV positive patients receiving ART had a reduction in the risk of incident TB when IPT was administered in Ethiopian settings. Moreover, the protective role of IPT intervention seemed to be influenced by the duration of the intervention. To prevent HIV driven tuberculosis, they emphasize increasing the use of the isoniazid preventive therapy program and its stringent compliance.
