Diabetes Care Aug 22, 2019
Moulton CD, et al. - In this investigation involving 1,174 individuals [mean (SD) age was 56.7 (11.0) years], researchers evaluated the association of inflammation with worsening depressive symptoms in type 2 diabetes and examined whether this association was moderated by sex. Depressive symptoms were measured over a 2-year follow-up using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in a prospective cohort study of people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Models have been adjusted for age, ethnicity, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, HbA1c, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory medications, and baseline ln PHQ-9 score. The authors concluded that female sex gives specific vulnerability to the impacts of inflammation on depressive symptoms in type 2 diabetes.
