The prognostic value of optic nerve sheath diameter in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage

Critical Care Mar 01, 2019

Lee S, et al. - In this retrospective, multicenter, observational study, researchers performed brain computed tomography (CT) in 223 subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients to assess the role of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) as a predictor of neurological outcomes in these subjects. Within 12 h from onset of SAH and within 24 h from treatment of a ruptured aneurysm, initial and follow-up brain CTs were performed, respectively. Using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS, 1 to 5), they determined neurological status at 6-month follow-up. ONSD showed considerable predictive value for prediction of poor neurological outcome, as revealed by analysis of the receiver operating characteristic curve (C-statistics, 0.735 to 0.812). Based on the findings, they concluded that an improved prognostic accuracy in SAH cases could be obtained with the use of ONSD measured with CT together with clinical grading scales.
