The prognostic value of interleukin 6 in multiple chronic diseases and all-cause death: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
Atherosclerosis Dec 09, 2018
Cainzos-Achirica M, et al. - Researchers evaluated a large, multiethnic, contemporary population to assess the associations and prognostic utility of interleukin-6 (IL-6) for the prediction of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events, heart failure (HF), and other chronic diseases. This study included a total of 6,617 participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (5,640 non-users, 977 statins users at baseline). They found a robust and independent association of IL-6 with ASCVD events, HF, and all-cause mortality—especially among statin users. IL-6 had a limited prognostic value for the prediction of coronary heart disease (CHD) events but a possible role was suggested in the prediction of stroke, HF, and all-cause death in asymptomatic statin users.
