The prognostic utility of pre-treatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte-ratio (NLR) in colorectal cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Cancer Medicine Jul 30, 2021
Naszai M, et al. - Via this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers investigated the prognostic utility of pre-treatment blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in colorectal cancer (CRC) and metastatic CRC. They explored PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE, and selected 71 eligible papers including 32,788 patients. Poor clinical results were noted in relation to high NLR. Findings corroborated NLR as a readily available prognostic biomarker in colorectal cancer despite the limitations of some studies previously documenting this finding. Routine collection of it in prospective clinical trials is recommended. Although there is the necessity of more standardised and rigorous large-scale research before high NLR can be completely evaluated as an independent predictor of CRC progression and outcome, the data indicate that it may be employed to highlight people with tumour-promoting inflammatory context.
