The prognostic significance of body mass index and metabolic parameter variabilities in predialysis CKD: A nationwide observational cohort study

Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Aug 18, 2021

Park S, Cho S, Lee S, et al. - This retrospective observational study demonstrates that higher variabilities in BMI and certain metabolic syndrome components are significantly related to a worse prognosis in predialysis CKD patients.

  • South Korea’s national health screening database was used.

  • A total 84,636 patients with predialysis CKD took part in the study.

  • Variability in BMI or metabolic parameters until baseline evaluation was study exposure, split into quartiles (with Q4 the highest quartile and Q1 the lowest).

  • There was a significant link of higher BMI variability with higher risks of all-cause mortality, KRT, myocardial infarction, and stroke, on comparing Q4 vs Q1.

  • A worse prognosis was experienced by patients with a higher number of metabolic syndrome components with high variability.
