The prognostic significance of body mass index and metabolic parameter variabilities in predialysis CKD: A nationwide observational cohort study
Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Aug 18, 2021
Park S, Cho S, Lee S, et al. - This retrospective observational study demonstrates that higher variabilities in BMI and certain metabolic syndrome components are significantly related to a worse prognosis in predialysis CKD patients.
South Korea’s national health screening database was used.
A total 84,636 patients with predialysis CKD took part in the study.
Variability in BMI or metabolic parameters until baseline evaluation was study exposure, split into quartiles (with Q4 the highest quartile and Q1 the lowest).
There was a significant link of higher BMI variability with higher risks of all-cause mortality, KRT, myocardial infarction, and stroke, on comparing Q4 vs Q1.
A worse prognosis was experienced by patients with a higher number of metabolic syndrome components with high variability.
