The prognostic relevance of histologic subtype in appendiceal adenocarcinoma
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Oct 18, 2019
Legué LM, et al. - Via performing a population-based study, researchers sought to assess the prognostic value of the histologic subtypes mucinous (MAC), non-mucinous (AC) and signet ring cell (SRCC) adenocarcinoma among patients with appendiceal cancer. Using the Netherlands Cancer Registry, they assessed data of 675 patients with primary appendiceal adenocarcinomas diagnosed between 2001 and 2015; the most frequently encountered histologic subtype was AC (50.9%), followed by MAC (35.8%) and SRCC (13.3%). Observations revealed no prognostic relevance histologic subtype in locoregional or systemic metastatic disease in appendiceal adenocarcinoma. In peritoneal metastases, a favorable prognosis was evident in correlation with mucinous histologic subtype vs non-mucinous and signet ring cell subtype.
