The prognostic effect of anatomic subsite in HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Jun 16, 2019

Tham T, et al. - Researchers conducted this SEER database study by stratifying the HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer cohort into two primary groups, tonsillar-related areas (TRA)-palatine and lingual tonsils and non-tonsillar oropharyngeal subsites (nTRA) to investigate how HPV influence the survival of these patients. Observations revealed significantly more common occurrence of HPV-positive squamous cell cancer in TRAs (73%) vs nTRAs (31.2%). They noted a worse cause-specific survival in patients with HPV-positive disease in nTRAs vs individuals with HPV-positive disease in TRAs after controlling for age, treatment, stage, race, and income.
