The profile and prognosis of youth with status migrainosus: Results from an observational study
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Feb 15, 2020
Orr SL, Turner A, Kabbouche MA, et al. - Via this retrospective clinical cohort study, the clinical features of a large sample of children, adolescents, and young adults with a history of status migrainosus (SM) are explored and their short-term prognosis is described. From the Cincinnati Children’s Headache Center, researchers assessed 5,316 youth with migraine; of these, 559 (10.5%) had a history of SM. The multivariate logistic regression model revealed older age, migraine with aura, medication overuse headache, headache frequency, higher headache severity, months with headache at initial consultation, and admission to infusion center at visit B as predictors that are significantly associated with SM. More frequent reports of experiencing an increase in 4 or more headache days per month at follow-up were evident for patients with a history of SM: 15.2% vs 11.1% for those without SM. These findings suggest youth with SM to be a separate subgroup of the migraine population that have an unfavorable short-term prognosis.
