The preventive effect of breastfeeding against ovarian cancer in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Gynecologic Oncology Jul 28, 2021
Eoh KJ, Park EY, Chang YJ, et al. - By conducting this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers focused on the significance of the length of the breastfeeding span on ovarian cancer risk among BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. They explored PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases to identify the relevant case-control and cohort studies. They analyzed five studies, including one cohort study and four case-control studies, in this meta-analysis. Findings indicated that breastfeeding represents a preventive as well as a changeable factor for ovarian cancer in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. A significant prophylactic impact against ovarian cancer development was conferred by ever having performed breastfeeding, among BRCA1 mutation carriers. However, a decreased ovarian cancer risk in relation to a period of 1 year or more of breastfeeding was observed among BRCA2 mutation carriers.
