The prevalence of pressure ulcers in community-dwelling older adults: A study in an Indonesian city
International Wound Journal Mar 25, 2019
Sari SP, et al. - In 325 community-dwelling adults (aged 60 years or older) in Indonesia, researchers determined the prevalence and the features of pressure ulcers (PU), including specific features as well as the use of formal and informal care. They used a cross-sectional design for the study. They reported a 10.8% overall PU prevalence and 5.2% PU prevalence excluding category 1. The degree of physical activity, problems with sensory perception, and having a history of stroke were identified as the primary strong contributors to PUs in this study population. Wound care or information regarding PUs from formal caregivers was not received by any of the participants. From family caregivers, wound care was received by only 11.4%. In the studied population, pressure ulcers represented a relevant and largely unaddressed issue. Recommendation for developing an intervention program was made in order to manage the PU problem in the community.
