The prevalence of frailty and its association with clinical outcomes in general surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Age and Aging Aug 06, 2018

Hewitt J, et al. - General surgical patients were investigated for prevalence of frailty and its impact. Researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis identifying 2,281 participants (males: 49.3%; mean age ranged from 61 to 77 years old) from nine observational studies. By frailty subgroup (not-frail, pre-frail and frail), the estimated prevalence of frailty ranged between 31.3 and 45.8% for pre-frailty and 10.4 and 37.0% for frailty. Day 30 mortality was 8% for frail vs 1% for non-frail patients; their respective mean lengths of stay were 9.6 days and 6.4 days. These results suggest that, in general surgery, there is a correlation of frailty with adverse post-operative outcomes.
