The prevalence of eustachian tube dysfunction symptoms in temporomandibular joint disorder patients
The Laryngoscope Mar 26, 2020
Newman AC, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the cross‐sectional prevalence of eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) symptoms in patients with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) using the the seven‐item Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire (ETDQ‐7). In total, 21 individuals with confirmed TMJD completed the ETDQ‐7 at routine consult or follow‐up for their TMJD. Data reported that the mean ± standard deviation ETDQ‐7 score for the cohort was 24.5 ± 12.5. According to this prospective cross‐sectional analysis, ETD symptoms are highly prevalent among TMJD patients, as determined by patient-reported outcome measures. It is unclear whether these symptoms reflect true eustachian tube function derangement in these patients or whether there is only clinical similarity between ETD and TMJD. Future research efforts could, however, overcome this dilemma.
