The prevalence of diabetes in Afghanistan: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Public Health May 28, 2021
Akhtar S, Nasir JA, Javed A, et al. - Researchers focused on the prevalence of diabetes as well as its associated risk factors in Afghanistan, via a systematic review and meta–analysis. EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Sciences, Google Scholar and the Cochrane library were explored to identify the relevant studies. There were 64 potentially relevant studies, of which, only 06 studies met the inclusion criteria and were considered for meta-analysis. As per findings, diabetes prevalence was estimated to be 12.13% in Afghanistan, and the highest and the lowest prevalence were noted in Kandahar and in Balkh province, respectively. Increasing age, obesity and hypertension were revealed as main risk factors. Community-based care as well as preventive training programmes should be provided.
