The prevalence, burden and risk factors associated with bronchial asthma in Commonwealth of Independent States countries (Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan): Results of the CORE study
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Jul 12, 2018
Nugmanova D, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence, burden and risk factors related to Bronchial Asthma (BA) in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries as part of the CORE study (Chronic Obstructive REspiratory diseases). This study included 2842 adults (≥18 years) recruited (964 in Kiev, Ukraine, 945 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and 933 in Baku, Azerbaijan) in 2013–2015 during household visits. The strategy used was a two-step cluster random sampling. Information on respiratory symptoms, smoking, medical history was obtained from all respondents. To estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% CI for the link between risk factors and BA, binary logistic regression was used. Findings emphasized that BA is likely to be underreported in CIS countries (Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan) as the prevalence of doctor diagnosed asthma vs prevalence of wheezing symptoms was significantly lower in these countries.
