The prevalence and risk of urinary tract infection in malnourished children: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Pediatrics Jul 31, 2019
Uwaezuoke SN, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis of data from 34 studies involving 3294 malnourished children, researchers provided estimates of pooled prevalence of urinary tract infection (UTI) and combined UTI risk in comparison with their well-nourished counterparts. For this investigation, they involved 26 cross-sectional and 8 case-control studies reporting on the prevalence of UTI in malnourished children, and in malnourished children vs healthy controls, respectively. Investigators found that the pooled prevalence of UTI in malnourished children was 17%. In malnourished children, UTI is more prevalent than in their well-nourished counterparts. Findings suggested that UTI screening and treatment should be included in the malnourished children's management protocol to improve the outcomes of the disease.
