The prevalence and incidence of vertebral fractures in end-stage renal disease and the role of parathyroid hormone
Osteoporosis International Nov 22, 2019
Jansz TT, et al. - In 146 transplantation-eligible patients on dialysis, experts ascertained predominance of vertebral fracture and incidence in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) individuals and evaluated relationships of vertebral trabecular BMD and parathyroid hormone (PTH) with vertebral fracture. Even in relatively young and healthy ESRD individuals, the prevalence and incidence of vertebral fractures were high. Vertebral trabecular BMD is not related to vertebral fracture, and the relationship of PTH with vertebral fracture risk seems to be U-shaped. Although, the study did not estimate vertebral BMD using dual-energy x-ray absorption and evaluated vertebral fractures using lateral chest radiographs and not spine radiographs.
