The prevalence and clinical characteristics of vestibular schwannoma among patients treated as sudden sensorineural hearing loss: A 10-year retrospective study in southern China

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Mar 18, 2020

Yang W, Mei X, Li X, et al. - Among 1,249 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in southern China, researchers analyzed the prevalence and clinical faetures of vestibular schwannoma (VS). Between May 2009 and April 2019, they explored the medical records and MRI findings of all the 1,249 patients diagnosed with SSNHL in the Division of Otolaryngology at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital. Data reported that tumors size ranged from 6.1 mm to 24.2 mm, with 7 grade 1 tumors, 4 grade 2 tumors, and 3 grade 3 tumors. It was noted that  the total cost of MRI screening was $130,857 and the average cost of MRI to identify a VS patient was $9346. Data reported that the VS prevalence among individuals treated as SSNHL was 1.12%. It is not possible to predict the risk of VS in SSNHL by audiogram patterns, pure tone audiometry or hearing recovery. MRI is more suitable for the evaluation of VS in patients with SSNHL vs ABR in China.
